many as the Imam wants to perform. Aisha (ra) re-
ports that the prophet (sa) never did more than
eleven, but he did not limit the number for others.

In fact, during the time of Umar (ra), Uthman (ra)
and Ali (ra) the people would perform twenty rakats
of Tarawih. So thus, one can perform as many ra-
kats as desired, however we should end with a witr
( an odd number).

One should keep in mind that the Messenger of Al-
lah (sa) said,
"He who observes optional prayer (Tarawih prayers)
throughout Ramadan, out of sincerity of Faith and in
the hope of earning reward will have his past sins
pardoned.'' (Bukhari)
So thus no matter how many rakats the Imam per-
forms, you should follow him and in turn you will re-
ceive the reward of Tarawih.

Recitation of the Quran.

There is no particular sunnah regarding the recita-
tion during Tarawih. It is related that some people of
the early generations would pray with two hundred
